Developing Your Golf Swing From Waist Height Down
The Summer of Great Golf continues! Join the Greatness via the link 👉 gleam.io/wzjsW/improvement-prize-pack
The golf swing is much simpler than the average player thinks. Mike Malaska constantly reminds us that if we use our natural instincts to hit the golf ball, we usually get better results.
When Mike was a kid, his father taught him this drill that is used by countless baseball youth. Little did he know, he was developing a Golf Digest Legend Of Golf Instruction's golf swing!
As said before, the baseball swing is your golf swing and this is just another drill to emphasize that.
Learn to make the golf swing simpler with the right tasks, and become a better player, fast!

This makes total sense. There has to be a point on the body that is furthest from the ball at the top of the backswing (the furthest point of the coil), and that is the scapula, which is the large bone in the upper back - the scapula is connected to the shoulder bone/upper arm(humerus). ... The scapula needs to be "frozen in place" for a split-second while the downswing is started early and the pressure in the lower body transfers to the left side. ... * Sure, the golf swing is all one continuous motion, but, there is something of a temporary "freeze point" in the upper body/upper back while the weight/pressure is moving to the left side to start the downswing. ... This takes place in a number of athletic movements, like a baseball outfielder making a long throw - there is a momentary freeze of the right scapula while the left leg reaches forward and plants into the ground, THEN the upper body uncoils rapidly in order to start the chain reaction of releasing energy from the scapula, to the shoulder, to the arm, then finally to the wrist and hand as the baseball is released.

Please check out my new series Part 1 just released Henry Picard believed that Hogan could really bend around, and that he had ‘great posture, footwork, everything’. It was Picard who, in the 30s, had told Hogan to weaken his left hand grip. This was necessary because of Hogan’s flexibility and the amount of counterclockwise motion with his left hand and arm in the downswing. It was Picard who told Hogan to ‘wheel it’ and to ‘turn it loose’, because he believed that if you have a true swing (as he believed Hogan possessed by then), ‘the harder you hit it, the better you hit it’. If you return the club at full capacity to the ball, the club head will true itself up at impact.

Your videos are awesome Mike, but the only thing I struggle with is the regular references to baseball hits, and the resultant body movement. I’m originally from the UK but have lived in Australia for the last 40 years. As a result, I never played baseball, as it wasn’t a mainstream sport or even offered when I was a kid. I wouldn’t know how to correctly hit a ball using a baseball bat, and struggle a little trying to put together the baseball link and the golf swing. I’m not complaining, just a feedback post.

The golf club is not a baseball bat and we do not strike the ball with the shaft! This misconception is why most everyone has a hard time learning golf. The golf club is a very unique tool, unlike any other that we know or use. To assume it works like a baseball bat or tennis racket is exactly the reason everyone finds golf difficult. What makes the golf club so unique is that it's the only tool that sends the ball at an acute angle to the shaft or handle. Literally no other tool does that. Every other tool sends the ball at an obtuse or right angle at the most.

Hi Mike so what your saying is the momentum of the club and pushing back of the left hip will engage the right hip to turn correctly without having to make the right hip turn , so in a feel type scenario when practising would that be what I should try to feel in drills till it's automatically happening

Here in finland we got our own Baseball (pesäpallo) were you hit in a ball coming straight down. So its easier to get a clean hit. But the mechanics of hitting are the same obviously. And yes having played a bit this idea works also for me really well! As you can se, its not a multi million sport, but popular in some towns. ruclips.net/video/Pz19WhYxaxA/видео.html

Unbelievable! After advocating pushing off the back foot for years now you're advocating the opposite? No wonder no one can learn golf from instructors like you. When an instructor changes his entire approach to the golf swing because the world's #1 player does something completely different, you know they're full of shit. This is embarrassing. Mike has never advocated anything like this before and now that Scheffler's #1 ... Mike's instruction has completely changed. Also, ask yourself, was Mike there with Scotty practicing the day after or is he just making everything up? How does he know what Scotty was practicing? He doesn't! After 30 years of golf instruction shouldn't you know what you're talking about by now and not change on a whim?

"Handle down, heel out" is the move. It's subtle but you can see it right before/at impact - as he's releasing the club/bat. Basically the natural unwinding (not rolling) of the arm/hand action to bring the face back to square

Mike hi. Great lesson! Here’s a mini aha moment I got from this video; The reason a lot of practice swings are perfect and then followed by bad shots is because with a practice shot the brain knows there’s no ball to hit straight and so has no need to make compensations. The moment you step up to the ball it’s a different story. No wonder you often hear “ I mess up as soon as I have a ball in front of me”

@@rickrocketts183 An interesting thing to try is to focus your eyes on a spot 2 - 4 inches in front of the ball and hit balls. Trust it. I can actually see the ball leave the club face. Another thing to do is to look at your target for several seconds before hitting the ball. Keep the target fixed in your mind and swing to the target. Good luck!
